A Woman's Love

Barbara Kozelj, soprano

Duo Pleyel (Alexandra Nepomnyashchaya & Richard Egarr)

Instrument: Historical 19th Century or Modern piano.

'A Woman's Love' explores music and song inspired by the Love of Women in various situations, and how that love is dealt with. Haydn's powerful 'Arianna a Naxos' shows Arianna incensed by her lover Theseus who has deserted her on the island of Naxos, and she longs for her own death. Schumann's Frauenliebe is one of the greatest song cycles. It charts the feelings of a woman from first love, through marriage, to the death of her husband. Music for piano 4-hands by J.C. Bach, Mozart, Mahler and Percy Grainger add sometimes surprising takes on the same themes. Make sure to bring a rose and some tissues.
